The work measures around 3.2 × 2.4 metres. Hilma believed her abstract paintings were guided by spiritual forces, recording ideas she felt came from a higher consciousness.
She created all ten enormous paintings in just 40 days, painting them on paper rather than canvas. Group IV, No. 1, The Ten Largest, Childhood, 1907.
Hilma af Klint created her first abstract works in Stockholm in 1906, years before Kandinsky, Mondrian, Delaunay and Malevich explored abstraction.
